Wind power: Alpic, a certified player and trainer recognised by the Global Wind Organization

The Global Wind Organization (GWO) is an international non-profit association bringing together the leading manufacturers, maintenance providers and operators of wind turbines.
In particular, it is involved in establishing common international standards with a view to creating an ever safer working environment.

‘Within the GWO, Alpic is recognised as a competent player in the field of working at height and rescue at height, with a quality process that is audited annually in accordance with the strict requirements of this international organisation,’ explains Bruno Lambert, Director of Alpic.

This year, Alpic obtained two new accreditations from the GWO:

  • the ability to train trainers, thereby strengthening its role as an expert,
  • authorisation to organise training courses at external sites, whether at facilities that meet GWO requirements or directly on operational wind turbines.

Campaigning for real-life training with France Renouvelables for the wind energy sector

Alpic is also a member of France Renouvelables (formerly France Énergie Éolienne - FEE). This association is the representative body for the wind energy sector in France.

With more than 360 professional members from the sector, it formulates proposals to improve and strengthen the regulatory and economic framework for renewable energies in France: ‘Until now, France Renouvelables has focused relatively little on the issue of training. That's why it's important to make our voice heard,’ emphasises Bruno Lambert.

Alpic is therefore working to raise awareness among the association's members of the need to have training practices available throughout France, but also to improve training conditions.

The majority of training courses are currently held on structures made of metal that are no more than 10 metres high – a situation that is far removed from the reality on the ground, where modern wind turbines can reach heights of over 100 metres. Fear of heights can endanger workers who have not learned to overcome it.

Solutions offered by Alpic to improve safety in the wind industry

One concrete solution, promoted by Alpic to France Renouvelables, could be to use decommissioned wind turbines for training purposes: ‘For training in working at height, we don't need the blades, just the upper hub, with its specific geometry, and the internal configuration of the tower,’ explains Bruno Lambert.

The idea put forward by Alpic's director goes even further: he proposes pooling resources between the various players in order to invest in sites dedicated to training. This approach would make it possible to overcome the limitations of current ‘win labs,’ which generally do not accurately reproduce the height and configurations of contemporary wind turbines.

Through its involvement in these two bodies, Alpic aims to contribute to the development of training standards and, by extension, to improving safety in the wind industry.
