Transport and logistics: workplaces with specific risks

The transport and logistics sector involves the movement of goods, often to tight deadlines and with complex operational requirements, exposing workers to several distinct risks:

  • overturning or falling goods on the operator's head or feet,
  • falling on slippery or congested floors,
  • falling from a delivery dock,
  • collisions with a vehicle,
  • musculoskeletal disorders,
  • bad weather or extreme heat when working outdoors,
  • working conditions in the cold for the frozen food sector,
  • etc.

The National Safety Council, the main safety organisation in the United States, points out that this sector has the highest rate of injuries and illnesses leading to time off work.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) therefore plays a key role in reducing workplace accidents among the workers concerned:

  • lorry drivers,
  • dockers,
  • warehouse workers,
  • handling agents,
  • order pickers,
  • warehouse workers and forklift drivers in loading/unloading areas or in warehouses.

What PPE for transport and logistics professionals?

Protective clothing for material handlers

Handling is often a physical job that requires breathable, lightweight, hard-wearing textiles. To this end, Delta Plus offers a wide range of workwear combining trousers, overalls and multi-pocket vests specifically designed for handling. Comfortable clothing with a loose or stretch fit that promotes freedom of movement.

For warehouse workers who work outside - for example on the quays of a port area - it is essential to be able to protect themselves from the cold and rain:

In a warehouse cluttered with pallets and packages, operators of machinery (forklift trucks, pallet trucks, etc.) need to be able to clearly distinguish and identify other workers moving around them during manoeuvres: high-visibility clothing helps reduce the risk of collisions, with fluorescent and reflective elements suitable for day and night conditions.

Foot protection: in warehouses and on loading bays

Logistics professionals travel long distances every day and need safety shoes that they feel comfortable in.

When choosing this PPE for logistics, several criteria should be taken into consideration:

  • non-slip soles prevent slipping,
  • a safety toecap made of steel or composite helps to reduce the risk of injury if goods fall on the foot,
  • the concepts of comfort, protection and hygiene: Aerofood boots, for example, have been designed to meet these three requirements of the food industry,
  • light and breathable footwear that is also robust and ensures good support for the foot - such as Alpino or Cinto, for example, are the best choice for walking along warehouse aisles or driving lorries or machinery.

Gloves suitable for handling activities

Carrying heavy loads, picking up splinters on wooden pallets, irritating the palm of the hand with ropes or straps, gripping packages of all shapes, sizes and consistencies... the hands of logistics operators are subjected to harsh conditions.

To protect them, Delta Plus offers a wide range of gloves adapted to the workplace:

  • leather, fabric or rubber;
  • designed for aqueous, oily or dry environments;
  • heat resistant for outdoor work;
  • thin for greater precision;
  • anti-cut or reinforced to prevent injuries due to impact, such as the model Athos VV902.

PPE for high-risk sectors

Handling can also be particularly tricky in certain sectors, such as chemicals, where a coverall and gloves suitable for chemical risks are a must.

When working at height on a platform, a fall arrest harness and a Delta Plus helmet must be worn, while earplugs are recommended for personnel working on airport tarmacs or sites exposed to continuous engine noise.
